Sicily does not only offers a richness of its culture, monuments, and good food in store for us, but also tans of free beaches where the naturism for straight, family, and gay people is free and well spread; often they are real natural earthly paradises, ideal for relaxing and enjoying a few days away from the daily routine.
Experience and visit these beaches, including the small lakes and beautiful nature reserves: immerse yourself in crystal-clear waters admire vivid and vibrant colors, and live the scents and smells of our beloved island… this is also part of our culture!
Hospitality also applies here, in many places, whatever your company or sexual orientation, you will be welcome. Sicily by its recent and past history is a historically tolerant and often very inclusive island, with a long tradition of welcoming the gay and lesbian community. This is precisely why it is one of the most popular destinations for LGBTQ+ travelers worldwide and not only because of its rich artistic and cultural heritage. So if you are looking for peace and tranquility, and you love the wilderness or the immensity and quietness of the sea, we recommend visiting the island, especially in June or September/October, when the weather is mild and tourists do not completely overrun Sicily.
Some of the most renowned beaches and nature reserves include the following:
- the Zingaro Natural Reserve (Trapani),
- the Vendicari Reserve (Noto),
- the Cavagrande del Cassibile Reserve (Syracuse),
- the Torre Salsa Reserve (Agrigento),
- those reservation in the Madonie Park,
- the Trapani Salt Pans Reserve, and much more…
Let’s see what they have in store for us…
Zingaro Natural Reserve in the province of Trapani
We are in the province of Trapani…prepare comfortable shoes and a nice hat because there is quite a bit of walking, but we assure you it is worth it; to get to and access the Zingaro Natural Reserve you must pay a ticket at the entrance. There are two entrances to this Eden, the southern one from Scopello and the northern one from the super-bustling San Vito Lo Capo. The two entrances are about 2 hours apart.
The Zingaro reserve was established in 1981 and is certainly one of Sicily’s best-known and most fascinating nature reserves; it has a good 10 km of coastline between Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo that provides breathtaking views along its path that often overhangs the sea.
It is accessible daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Along the path and coastline are as many as seven small beaches and coves that can be reached either by land (as we recommend) or by sea; there have been many fires that have plagued this area but fortunately, Mother Nature has taken its course and ensures extraordinary colors.
For who? These Zingaro are the beaches for all, youths, adults, and families; they are not explicitly dedicated to the gay and LGBTQIA+ population but are very intimate and private so it’s ideal for those seeking privacy and often suitable for naturism
Families, gays, and friends at the Vendicari Nature Reserve in the province of Syracuse
A true paradise on earth, located between Noto and Marzamemi, the Vendicari Nature Reserve covers more than 1,500 hectares. The entire northern part is frequented by families, the southern part becomes naturist, and in the lowest part, inside the reserve is the famous gay beach of Marianelli, an oasis of tranquility surrounded by dunes and almond groves.
Even during high season, Marianelli remains uncrowded and beloved by naturists.
There are several accesses to reach it, either from the sea or from the countryside; you have to walk quite a bit but the result will surely repay your efforts!
Reserve of Cavagrande del Cassibile (Syracuse)
Still in the province of Syracuse, this reserve of about 10 kilometers is famous for the small lakes of Avola, natural pools with blue waters surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Although they have no naturist or directly gay-dedicated beaches, the ponds are an ideal destination for those who love nature in the round and are popular with the LGBTQ+ community.
Before you head down… get your lungs ready, cover yourself in sunscreen and mosquito repellent, and a nice hat!
Trapani and Paceco Salt Pans Nature Reserve.
Established in 1995, this reserve covers the stretch of coastline from Trapani to Marsala. The Salt Pans, with a centuries-old history, are now a WWF oasis and one of the most visited areas in Sicily for the colors and scenery they offer. The beaches along the reserve’s shoreline, while not overtly gay, are perfect for relaxing, sunbathing, and reserve beautiful sunsets where the mountains of salt in the street are tinged pink. Eraclea Minoa and the nature reserve of Torre Salsa (Agrigento)
Between Siculiana Marina and Eraclea Minoa, the WWF Oasis of Torre Salsa is a natural paradise with some of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily, a lush green nature flows into the sea!
In Eraclea Minoa there is a renowned gay beach, characterized by truly crystal-clear waters and a grove ideal for relaxing in the hottest hours.
Beach the dunes of San Leone (Agrigento)
The beautiful Agrigento not only reserves for us the archaeological park with its magnificent temples but also wide and long beaches and a rich nightlife.
During the day to some naturists but especially in the evening, the Dunes constitute a very popular beach for gays both in summer and winter; located between the fifth and sixth cross streets coming from San Leone, it is an ideal place for meetings and relaxation.
We would also like to refer you to another article specifically for the gay beaches and LGBTQ+ near Palermo…Addaura, Capo Gallo, Balestrate… sun, beautiful seas, naturism and lots of fun there too.
With these wonderful beaches and nature reserves, Sicily is confirmed as a must-see destination for the LGBTQ+ community in search of beauty, tranquility, and adventure.
