[:it]Ecco a voi un’intervista a Paola Di Rosa, la prima tra i mentor che parleranno durante i workshop su innovazione e startup in Sicilia rivolti ai giovani, che si terranno nell’ambito della MostraEvento “Made OF Sicily”. Tema del primo workshop “L’ideazione di una nuova impresa e il business model canvas.”
Ciao Paola, raccontaci di te: quale è il tuo profilo? Di che cosa ti occupi?
Sono una giurista di impresa da anni dedicata alla compliance legale delle startup e alla finanza per l’innovazione (angel investing e vc) . Sono anche un advisor delle startup e da qualche tempo mi occupo della formazione del capitale umano del sud, ancora poco abituato a ragionare secondo logiche imprenditoriali.
Sono responsabile, infatti, di uno Startuplab creato da Atfactory (di cui sono founder) in collaborazione con Ersu Palermo (Ente regionale per il diritto allo studio) e sono event manager di molti format per la diffusione del businness mindset e della cultura dell’innovazione come gli Hackathon, verticali su temi specifici come l’healthcare, il fintech, il food ed altro) e il Lean Startup Machine Workshop, lo Startup Weekend ed i Digital Lab.
Ho anche una collaborazione con SELLALAB, il più importante acceleratore fintech italiano, che metto in collegamento con i talenti del sud.
Cosa ti ha portata ad intraprendere l’avventura di ATFactory?
Come dicevo sono una giurista di impresa e, fin dagli inizi della mia attività, ho sempre lavorato con aziende del nord Italia: questo perché il sud non ha una mentalità imprenditoriale, a mio avviso a causa di una carenza di offerta formativa in grado di fare sviluppare ai giovani il cosiddetto business mindset.
In Sicilia sono poche le aziende perché tutti cercano il posto pubblico e nessuno ha il coraggio di rischiare nonostante le tante opportunità economiche nei settori più tradizionali come il turismo, la cultura o l’agrifood.
Eppure, nel mio lavoro, a Torino o Milano, ho sempre incontrato persone del sud: questo è un segno che il problema non è la nostra capacità di fare impresa ma un tessuto socio-economico ed istituzionale che evidentemente manca di qualcosa. Ho creato AtFactory proprio per colmare un gap culturale.
Perchè hai deciso di svolgere le tue attività in Sicilia? Quali sono gli ostacoli che hai incontrato, e quali invece i vantaggi?
Ti rispondo con le stesse parole del post pubblicato su “Che Futuro” di qualche hanno fa “Sono siciliana, sono testarda, e così a Palermo faccio innovazione al femminile”.
Ho sempre trovato intollerabile la frase “non si può fare” sopratutto perché, come anticipavo, i siciliani al di fuori della nostra isola sono persone di successo; ripeto non è un problema di persone ma è un problema di regole e di comportamenti sbagliati. Credo di essere (o almeno aspiro ad essere) una changemaker ed è per questo che son rimasta in Sicilia.
Sicuramente è un percorso molto complicato, lungo, a volte snervante perché manca il tessuto socioeconomico in cui sarebbe più semplice far comprendere il tipo di lavoro che con AtFactory portiamo avanti.
Ma proprio questo è quello che lo rende più interessante e stimolante, sopratutto quando, concluso un Hackathon per esempio, sono gli stessi partecipanti a ringraziarci per avergli dato le stesse opportunità di chi vive a Milano o Londra, di avergli dato l’opportunità di lavorare in maniera “agile”, in team con tante professionalità complementari tra loro e con un approccio pratico che difficilmente trovano nelle università e di entrare i contatto con importanti aziende del tessuto imprenditoriale nel nord.
Come speri che si evolverà la tua attività nei prossimi anni?
Non è una speranza ma un obiettivo, quello di attrarre realtà aziendali importanti che vogliono investire sul capitale umano del sud e contestualmente generare una community di giovani (e meno giovani) interessati a fare startup e innovare le PMI del terrirorio.
Fino ad oggi sono riuscita a convincere Sellalab – del Gruppo Banca Sella Holding, che investe e supporta i progetti di economia digitale. Spero che i giovani siciliani riescano a raccogliere un’opportunità così importante.
L’obiettivo di ATFactory, così come quello di Sicily & Sicilians, è supportare i giovani siciliani che vogliono farsi strada con progetti innovativi: hai qualche consiglio da dare ai coloro che si sentono un po’ scoraggiati dalle poche opportunità del nostro territorio?
Come dicevo , il problema è saper cogliere le opportunità. Io credo poco al caso e alla fortuna e ritengo che ciascuno di noi sia artefice del proprio destino, per questo suggerisco sempre di cambiare l’atteggiamento mentale con cui i giovani si approcciano all’università e in genere ai workshop che AtFactory, ma anche altre realtà del territorio, organizzano. Accanto ad un percorso universitario suggerisco di affiancare format educativi che abbiano un approccio pratico, che stimolino la creatività e le capacità di problem solving. Suggerisco anche di selezionare gli eventi a cui partecipare prediligendo quelli in cui è possibile incontrare mentors qualificati e importanti aziende che spesso fanno recruitment proprio durante i workshop, durante i quali hanno modo di verificare direttamente come lavorano i ragazzi.
Per chi invece vuole sviluppare progetti innovativi, gestendo uno Start up Lab, non posso che suggerire di entrare in contatto con noi e con il network dei nostri partners.

Hi Paola, tell us something about yourself: What do you deal with?
What has been your path like?
I have been working as a firm legal expert for several years and I dedicated myself to the legal compliance of startup and to the financing for innovations (angel investing and vc). I am also a startup advisor and I have been taking care of the formation of the human capital in the South of Italy, which is still not used to think according to the entrepreneurial logics. Indeed, I am the responsible in a Startuplab created by AtFactory (of which I am founder) in collaboration with Ersu Palermo (Regional authority for the study right). In addition, I am also event manager for several formats for the spread of the business mindset and of the culture of innovation, such as the Hackathon (covering specific topics such as healthcare, fintech, food and much more) and the Lean Startup Machine Workshop, the Startup Weekend and the Digital Lab. I also have a collaboration with SELLALAB, the most important Italian fintech accelerator, which I help in the connection with the talents from the South.
What has led you to join the adventure of AtFactory?
As I was saying before I have been working as a firm legal expert and since the beginning I have always worked with firms from the North of Italy. This happens, as in the South there is not an entrepreneurial mindset. This for me mainly happens because of a lack in the formation offer that allows young people to develop the so-called business mindset. In Sicily there aren’t many businesses as everybody is looking for a job in the public sector and nobody has the courage to take a risk, despite of the many economic opportunities also in more traditional sectors, such as tourism, culture or agrifood. However, during my experience in Turin or Milan, I have always found people coming from the South: this shows how the problem doesn’t rely in our capability of making business but in a socio-economic and institutional net that lacks something. I created AtFactory to fill this cultural gap.
Why have you decided to carry out your activity in Sicily? 
Which are the obstacles that you have encountered and which are the advantages?
I would like to answer to you with the same words of a post published some years ago on “Che Futuro”: “I am Sicilian, I am stubborn and so I make innovation in a feminine way in Palermo”. I have always found the statement “this cannot be done” unbearable, as, as stated earlier, the Sicilians are very successful outside our island. I would like to repeat it once again, it is not a problem of people, but it is a problem of wrong rules and behaviors. I believe to be (or at least I aspire to be) a changemaker and that is why I decided to stay in Sicily. For sure, this is a very complicated and long path, which sometimes is also draining as there is the lack of this socioeconomic fabric that would make it easier to make people understand the type of work that we are carrying on with AtFactory. But this is also what makes it more interesting and stimulating, mainly when, after a Hackathon for example, the participants thank us for giving them the same opportunities that are given to those who live in Milan or London, for giving them the opportunity to work in an “agile” way, in team with many complementary professionals and with a practical approach that is hard to find in the universities and to network with important companies from the entrepreneurial landscape from the North.
How would you like your activity to evolve in the following years?
It is not a hope, but more an objective: to attract important companies that want to invest on the human capital from the South and contextually want to generate a network of young people (and also less young) interested in creating startup and in innovating the PMI of the territory.
Until now I managed to convince SELLALAB from the Gruppo Banca Sella Holding, which invests and supports the projects of digital economy. I hope that the young people from Sicily can catch such an important opportunity.
The aim of AtFactory, as well as the one of Sicily&Sicilians, is to support young Sicilians who want to make their way thanks to innovative projects: do you have any advice to give to those who feel discouraged for the lack of opportunities in our territory?
As stated before, the problem is to be able to grasp opportunities. I do not believe much in faith and in luck, I believe that each one of us is the maker of his own destiny. For this reason, I always suggest to change the mental attitude with which young people approach to university and to the workshops that we organize, as well as other realities in the territory. Along with a university path, I suggest to place formative formats that have a practical approach, that encourage creativity and the problem solving ability. I also suggest to join in some events, favoring those that give the chance to meet qualified mentors and important companies that are usually recruiting during the workshops as they can see how the young people work.
